NEYLAND Vs WILLIAMSTON, JULY 1891
In 1891, just 2 years after the historic first season in the history of Neyland Cricket Club, Neyland suffered
one of their heaviest defeats and their lowest score into the bargain! They entertained Williamston in July, 1891,
and lost by an innings and 22 runs, despite the fact that the visitors only scored 55 all out!
When Neyland went in to bat for the first time they were shot out for a paltry score of SIX ALL OUT - and three of
those were extras! Only R.Hall, J.Smith and H.Polille were able to sneak singles against the bowling of J.Elkins and
A.Goodridge, with the former returning the remarkable figures of five wickets for just one run. Goodridge took 2 for
2 and there were 3 run outs in the desperately low score.
Neyland fared little better at their second attempt as Elkins took another 6 wickets and five of the home batsmen were
again dismissed for ducks, making a total of thirteen in the team's two innings. Their final score of 27 meant that
Williamston were quite outstanding winners and for Neyland in was very much a case of back to the drawing board.
The scores do not make pretty viewing to anyone from Neyland but are still reproduced to show how a club can rise from
the ashes of such a heavy defeat so early in its cricketing life. Perhaps the only consolation for Neyland was that so
many of their top players were unavailable for the match although their opponents of the day would most certainly not
have accepted that fact as an excuse!
